Prefab Cabinets Picayune | Quartz & Granite
Good afternoon readers of the new and improved Prefab Cabinets Picayune. Just like the rain in south Mississippi, I but our readers thought Wild’s Cabinets and Flooring would never change the name of our series. Well, unlike our thoughts about the rain, you were wrong. Wild’s Cabinets and Flooring is now publishing the new series Prefab Cabinets Picayune. Why? Because unfortunately for our customers we are not longer offering custom cabinet jobs. We would greatly appreciate it if people did not come waltzing into our show room demanding custom cabinets and then throw a fit when we say no. Grow up and get over it. You are welcome.

Quartz & Granite
The question of the year: what is the freakin difference between quartz and granite? Well Wild’s Cabinets and Flooring is here to enlighten you…if we haven’t already which I have a suspicion that I already have. When I first heard about quartz and granite, after a while I started wondering if it wasn’t just the same thing but called two different names. As usually I was right, but wrong. In today’s article we are going to talk about some of the differences and similarities between quartz and granite counter tops, especially since we all need counter tops at some point in our adult lives.
Quartz
So quartz sounds all fancy and real and stuff, but it isn’t. Quartz is not a naturally occurring substance and is man made. It is made of oxygen and silicone. I guess oxygen is no longer considered a naturally occurring substance. Consider my mind blown. We are all breathing artificial air too I guess. Quartz is actually only 90% of itself which is another fact that has my brain swirling. The other 10% is made up of all those fancy names for plastic. Quartz is a completely sealed and non-porous material which means not cracks and such.
Granite
Granite is my personal favorite and I like to side glance at the granite display in our show room from time to time and gaze at its glorious splendor. Unlike it’s fake cousin, granite is a naturally occurring substance and partially made of quarts…this brings up another set of questions that make me confused about the universe. The other part of granite is hardened magma. If that isn’t bad-butted then I don’t know what is. It a naturally occurring substance which means it has traces of cracks and fissures. It is porous and can break, fracture, and stain. However, granite is one of the strongest materials in the world which blows my mind how it can randomly crack.
How Are They Alike?
I like to refer to quartz and granite as the first cousins of the counter top world. They are just enough alike and just enough different. Both materials are apparently prone to “etching, abrasions, and heat.” Neither however are effected by acid. So they can crack from heat, but impervious to acid. That makes sense. Both are vulnerable to chip and breaks if subjected to blunt force such as slamming a cast iron pan against the edge. But…acid does nothing. Anyone else’s mind blown yet?
Appearance
I’ll try not to be biased, but granite is going to look the most natural in appearance because it is. It comes in an array of naturally occurring colors, however because it is natural it will be difficult to match a seam or other counter tops. There is a LOT of variation. Quartz on the other hand is going to be a breeze when finding a match because it is all made the exact same way and is not naturally occurring. Quartz is uniform and comes in endless colors.
